Idea #78: The current way to relocate an origin is slow and non intuitive

Written by yuno the 19 Aug 10 at 16:26. Category: Addons. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
As 3d artists we know the usefulness of relocating an object's origin. Currently it is possible to relocate an object's origin by using some commands that either snap it to the cursor or re-centers it back on its data, or you could enter edit mode and offset the data's position.
This is not very intuitive and can be slow if you need to do it a lot.

Solution #1: Implement the ability to grab and move object origins
Written by yuno the 19 Aug 10 at 16:26.
In addition to what is already there.
Implement the ability to grab and move an object's origin by toggling on or off a switch that will put you in origin move mode.
This of course can be a button on the interface as well as a keyboard shortcut.
While in origin move mode you will be able to move the selected origin by using all the standard keyboard shortcuts you use to move any other object around or display the translate manipulator and use that instead if you prefer. The ability to snap with any of the snap methods should also be present.

This of course does not apply to every single type of object in Blender.

Solution #2: Ability to move object origin directly to vertex
Written by JulianH the 9 Sep 10 at 07:19.
Usually, moving the origin wouldn't help a lot since you usually want to place it at some exact position, normally to one or the center of several vertices.

Therefore I think the best solution would be to allow the repositioning of the object cursor (with Ctrl + Alt + Shift + C) in Edit-Mode, directly to the selected vertexe(s).

This would make the current workflow
- Snap Cursor to Vertex
- Go to Object-Mode
- Snap Origin to Cursor
a lot faster, then being
- Snap Origin to Vertex

Maybe this is something that, after some guideline, may not be done in Edit-Mode, then go to Object and back to Edit without telling the user or something, I think that should be possible.

the main thing i miss with moving object centres is the ability to snap them quickly to verts without having to take everything via the 3d cursor.

in general though the 3d cursor feels very outdated - it would be great to be able to move it around without having to change what is active or selected, and for it to be movable with axis constraints and snaps etc.

Thanks Devs, we have customizable shortcuts now! ;)
