multi-thread everything

multi-threaded fluid simulation
multi-threaded cloth simulation
multi-threaded preview render
multi-threaded playblast render
another nice update for the preview renderer would be (as seen in modo) to render like a progressive jpeg. so the longer you wait the clearer the render gets. this lets you have preview open all the time on a seperate view and constantly see your changes

Indicate Animated values on Panels
|
|
Written by Papa Smurf the 13 Nov 08 at 23:21. Category: Animation. New
|
|
If an object/material/texture property is animated, (for example there is an ipo curve for Material RGB), then on the panel where the user usually sets that property (Materials panel) is grayed out or a darker shade as a visual cue.
If the user changes the property by moving the slider or entering a value, a popup window asks them if they want to establish a new key, or ignore the entry.

View Mode: "Solid + Wireframe"

Currently blender has (among others) a "Solid" and a "Wireframe" view-mode. Why not combine them to a extra view-mode?
(For an example look here: http://www.ag-systems.net/mxw/book_wire.jpg)

Infinite Planes
|
|
Written by Will the 13 Nov 08 at 23:21. Category: Modelling. New
|
|
An infinite plane is a plane that spans an infinite distance. This would be very useful, especially when making landscape scenes with Blender.
After trying Bryce 5.5, I found that the infinite plane feature was the one I used the most. I would love to see something like this in Blender!

It would be nice if one could correct a vote after it has been cast. Maybe clicking the right arrow in the first place went a bit wrong, now you voted for while you wanted to vote against. Or maybe an idea got improved with a very good Feature Request that explains it All.

File thumbnail

Written by Vincent the 22 Nov 08 at 00:58. Category: File/Image browser. New

A thumbnail of the last rendered image, saved within the .blend file. It later shall be shown in the file browser of Blender. Also, I know it's possible, but don't know how it's done, but this thumbnail can be also shown in Windows Explorer or Linux File Manager/etc.

Paint and projections across object seams to eliminate/alleviate UV tweaking... and it would just be fantastic to project decals onto your model/texture.

Clear location/rotation/scale on a specific axis (in edit mode as well)
|
|
Written by Falgor the 21 Nov 08 at 01:52. Category: Tools. New

Especially when working with mirror modifier, it'd be great to be able to quickly set a location of a vertex to zero with a certain axis (usually x) when working with center vertices. This can be done with the n-menu (transform properties) but it requires using the mouse and it's not a single function (not fast, not hotkey, a menu).
Also sometimes you might want to clear the rotation or the scale on a certain axis only.
In edit mode it'd work in the object's local co-ordinates, I believe (rotation and scale are probably unusable, unless you count face normals, and that's only for the rotation angle of a face).
It'd work like this:
press alt+g
-->
menu item 1: clear location
menu item 2. clear loc X (would be toggled with XKey)
menu item 3. clear loc Y (would be toggled with YKey)
menu item 4. clear loc Z (would be toggled with ZKey)
Same with rotation and scale.

Select target by clicking instead of writing

In several modifiers, constraints etc. you can select object they're affected by (for example Armature, MeshDeform, Mirror and Lattice). It would be more natural to click into that textbox and then click on the object you want to select.

Better Rendering Window
|
|
Written by Handoko the 12 Nov 08 at 02:21. Category: Rendering. New
|
|
It will be very useful if the rendering window can:
Has many rendered images saved in memory until we close it. So you can compare one with another to decide which is the best. And you can set the total numbers allowed so it won't consume much memory if you do large resolution rendering.
Has ability to let you put some notes on it. You maybe want to put your radiosity settings, MBlur value, light positions ... everthing important to generate that quality of rendered image.
Auto generated notes about the rendered images, like time needed to render, which renderer you use (Blender internal, Yafray, or maybe external), which camera used, antialising information, etc. All the items to show in rendering window can be chosen in Preference menu.
Has some photo editing features. No, I don't mean Adobe Photoshop - that is too feature rich. Just some simple brightness/contrast/gamma adjustment, blur, and color balance. You know you often do brightness correction after rendering. But sometime the image itself doesn't contain enought color range, if you adjust the brightness too far it will become dull. So you can test adjust in rendering window to decide to use it or reconfigure the lamps.
You can save the rendered images directly from rendering window, don't have to use F3 (of course you still can use F3 if you want). And you can make it autosave using an autoincrement filename to a folder you specify.

Center for all objects

The 'center' buttons only work for some object types (just meshes?). It would be useful if this function could be extended to all types of object.

material editor

Current implementation shows only the material that is applied to object that I have selected.
However when I want to create a file that contains only materials, I have to create object to assign them to so that Blender will save them.
And there is no one view that will show me all the materials in the scene. Most applications have the ability to create and view all materials without even applying them to objects.
Having a window view that would show all materials using thumbnails would help.
Additionally the ability to see which object is assigned to given material. Currently this is complicated if not borderline impossible. Sometimes during creation of meshes, i create a few materials.001 and i don't recollect which object has that material. So i have to go through a bunch of objects (and also look through objects that have various materials assigned) to identify where it is to correct the assignment.

Stencil/Drill Tool - Exrude and Bevel Tool
|
|
Written by Trager the 21 Nov 08 at 01:54. Category: Tools. New

Stencil/Drill Tool
We all know the problems Blender has with booleans, since I hear they are updating that with the coming of BMesh, I'd like to suggest a stencil/ drill tool that would be similar to the ones many other 3D/animation applications have. It could operate much like the current retopo tool but would allow a direct "drawing" of vertices/polys into the given mesh. Anyone familiar with the Lightwave version of this tool should understand the methodology.
Extrude and Bevel Tool
The bevel modifier does not allow enough control on complicated objects and the current Bevel script has a tendency to complicate topography.
A bevel tool with an extrude option is needed in Blender (it would be nice to be able to define the angle at which the extrude would take place relative to the viewport by using the ctrl+middle mouse button). The bevel tool should give options on whether or not the creation of tris is acceptable. Also being able to make multiple bevels in a single step to create a "crown molding" effect would be quite useful.

IK target snap back
|
|
Written by kakapo the 21 Nov 08 at 01:50. Category: Animation. New

it would be very helpful if there were the option to always make IK targets snap back to the bone they are attached too after moving them. maya has this option.
it doesn't seem like this would be hard to add (but i have no clue about the ik code)? just solve the IK and if the IK target isn't positioned on the bone anymore after the mouse button gets released then set its position back to the bone? it should be an option.
edit:
the new "limit distance" contraint is very overcomplicated for this purpose. you need a helper bone to prevent cyclic dependency problems and it's very fiddly to set the right distance.
why not have a simple checkbox in the IK solver constraint for enabling a snap back like described?

Easy Delete Materials and Textures

We need to press too many buttons + save and reopen file for deleting materials and textures from the Blender scene. Simple Delete action should be enough, the rest should do Blender automatically.

Render Images Bigger Than 10,000 x 10,000 px
|
|
Written by Phil Holden the 14 Nov 08 at 20:49. Category: Rendering. New
|
|
I was working on a 6 foot x 2 foot outdoor banner at @ 150 DPI. When it came to render it I found that Blender GUI refused any width above 10,000 pixels. This was really annoying as I needed 10,800 pixels. It seems 10,000 is an arbitrary number and a false limitation. Other art packages allow much larger PNGs. I think this should be an easy feature to add but it would make a big difference to those working with print. Being able to render to tiles would also be a great feature for making images larger than file formats will allow. e.g. user sets rows and columns in the render options.

Mesh Emiters!

Mesh lights would be a really great addition to the blender internall. I know it is possible because I saw some time ago at graphicall test builds with this options.
Link to this build:

Mesh lights with indirect ray bouncing(even single bounce) would be a comparable to Global Ilumination!
