idea #11: Indicate Animated values on Panels

Written by Papa Smurf the 13 Nov 08 at 13:21. Category: Animation. Status: New
Description
If an object/material/texture property is animated, (for example there is an ipo curve for Material RGB), then on the panel where the user usually sets that property (Materials panel) is grayed out or a darker shade as a visual cue.

If the user changes the property by moving the slider or entering a value, a popup window asks them if they want to establish a new key, or ignore the entry.

Wow! This is a great idea! You don't know how many times I have been so frustrated moving an object, and when I go to change frames, it has moved back! and then I remember -du-Oh - there's an IPO curve dummy. so then I have to go back to that frame, move it again, and THEN press I. Having a cute little popup when I change frames (if I have moved an animated location) would be so...elegant.

would this work for bones, too?

Yes, it should work for anything that is animate-able, and which has an IPO curve associated with it.

Yesterday I thought this idea was a joke from mr. Smurf, but I see 3 people voted for it. A visual cue of animated values would be definitely nice, but voted no because of the popup. Instead I propose to make 4 types of visual cues(colors) on animated values - 1 color for non animated, 1 for animated, 1 for animated and keyed on current frame,1 for animated and changed on current frame without keying.

Great idea, would be similar to the "Animation icon" in XSI.

this is part of "All is animable" animation system, like maya and xsi.

Fully agreed, minus the popup.

Been wanting to implement it for a long while, as well as being able to right-click on a UI field to set/clear keys. Waiting on 2.5 for this...

plus a special hotkey (shift+ctrl+click...?) that calculates shows a small graph to know the tendency of the changes (a tuny plot of the curve with a line indicating where the current value/frame is).

excellent idea .. minus the popup
vilda's idea of having it color coded is brilliant
hope it will be implemented

Thanks for posting this idea ! I think the popup should be selectable, as sometimes you want it and sometimes you dont.

As SaphireS says, XSI has a checkbox (similar to the html ones) near almost every parameter in the interface: when checked, the parameter can be animated and you clearly see it. No pop-up needed.

Great Idea.. but popup only optional please ;)

great!
only if an ipo exists for the value, than its greyed out or red, green, pink.. -just custom colored.
but no popup, just like it works now, change value->push I for new keyframe.
