Description
I would like to have an improved file dialog in blender.

rationale :

the current one...
1) does not have my shortcuts (favorite locations)
2) does not display previews and file information like the native one can (for all types of files, not only images)
3) does not use the same icon scheme as my system, therefore I need to read the file extensions and it takes longer (minor)
4) pops up in any window, apparently randomly; sometimes it pops up in e.g. buttons window, where it is way too small to be usable. I then need to use the hotkey to maximize it, then hit the hotkey to minize it after i'm done. this totally defeats the purpose of non-overlapping windows anyway
5) is very grey ;)
6) cannot follow symlinks/aliases on my system

I see this the other way around. If I could switch my system file-dialogs to the blender one I would. "F2 -> + -> ENTER" is the best shortcut ever designed. By all means, keep things as they are here, just improve it.

How would you deal with browsing inside blend files, for appending? -1

i also always found 4) very annoying when i was new to blender. often the file dialog seems to open in the worst possible window if you open it per file menu.

if you use F1/F2 it opens where the mouse is but what is the rule when opening it per file menu?

i am also for keeping the blender file dialog but such things should be thought about a bit.

i hate blenders file dialog - i can not remember another file dialog that was so "strange" - only on amiga 500 a was something like this...

but today we habe year 2008 - and blender dialog is not up-to-date!

rewrite it complete or better add native dialog

if someone decides to add native dialog box, please keep an option to choose between native or blender box... but i do not think it is an urgent thing...
as for favorites i love to use the recently used places...maybe that could be an idea...keep the recently used places even when you close blender

couldn't a native dialog opened quite easily with python + wxpython? in 2.5 you then could use a hotkey or arbitrary menu entry to start such a script.

I know the blender UI is a pain sometimes, but I very much enjoy not having anything unexpected happen when I am using a different OS.

I don't really want the native dialogs (didn't vote yet though), but anyway ... Auria lists some issues that could be improved in the current dialog:

1) Desktop favorites: I really think Blender should display the (freedesktop?) shortcuts in the dialog. Additional to the new blender-internal ones of course .... this should also be nicely organized so it doesn't become cluttered.

2) Previews: Well, use previews everywhere!!!11oneeleven ;) Trust me, the more we extend the use of previews in all of the possible locations in Blender the better.

3) Dunno if this would be a good idea, but using the system-defined icons for files _could_ improve things ... it could also distract from the only files that are actually possible to select (depends on the dialog of course)

All of these points would need some major discussion I believe :)

Actually items #1 and #4 and biggest showstoppers for me. I guess "native dialog" is not really my query, more "improved dialog".

Another point I'd like to say, is that on my system the blender file dialog cannot follow symlinks/aliases/whatever they're called. Very annoying

We all feel the same. Blender's File Dialog is a bit strange and hard to use.

So let's make it better.
