i don't want blender to be NURBS modeller, Rhino does the job.
BUT i would love to see Blender beeing able to import step or at least iges. I'm product designer so i often have to export and mesh my models to bring them in blender. It is annoying and and very often it causes doubled vertices on mirrored and revolved objects.
Maya does an excellent job on that (Direct Connect is awesome!)
An example how this could be implemented is the Revolution 4D plugin for Realsoft 3D. The OpenCascade software is available under a LGPL licence. I don't know if this licence can be combined with the GPL licence of Blender.
(see http://www.deltaknowledge.com/revolution4d/ and http://www.opencascade.org/ ).
An alternative solution is using Moi3D which is a commercial product. This software can read 3dm files and produce very nice polygon models with nice 4-vertex faces. It is not as good as having a tool integrated into Blender, but it works!
If the Nurbana implementation becomes a reality Blender wil be a NURBS modeler. And why not, Blender already has a game engine, sequence editor and a node compositor.
Importing NURBS without converting it to poly's would be a great feature, editing those NURBS in Blender would be even better :P
