Description
Will there ever be one?

Is there a plan to work on the Windows x86-64 code path? Currently (as far as i know), Windows code is not 64bit safe.

We are all looking for speed, and it would be nice to have this option on Windows as there is on Linux.

On Linux platform, Blender 64bit version (non optimized) is as fast as Blender 32bit with sseX optimizations. And 64bit optimized... well :)

It would be nice to have the same thing on the windows side.

Additionally, one thing I forgot to mention in the original version of this idea is support for more then 2Gb (32bit) and even 3GB (with laa version)

It be nice for the person that voted -1 to post a reason as to why? Is there any specific reason you think that Windows shouldn't get a 64bit version of Blender?

I further agree that an idea should show:

Your idea was:
x promoted
y demoted

The Blender Code is not 64bit safe. Earlier on there was a version, but it saved blender files that were not 100% compatible with 32bit version.

Second of all, the rendering results weren't identical to 32bit or 32bit/64bit linux.

Its a known issue that Current code base for Windows 64bit is not ready yet.

Question was, is there a plan to do it?

The blender code not being 64bit safe means Windows 64bit code, not linux 64bit code. its different blender code.

I see that for the second time someone demoted this idea. I guess Linux people don't like windows? Is there any specific reason for the two negative votes beyond ones hatred of Windows?

There you have it a free solution. Use linux!? I suggest going with Dyne:Bolic, it is the easiest to set up, just drag the iso onto the C: it won't touch windows and you don't have to go through any troubles from a duel boot. One problem it may not have a 64 bit version. lol.

I am in favour of this 'idea' although I would rather call this a bug report than a feature request :) I'm pretty sure there already is a report in the bug tracker somewhere.

If you can't run Blender with 64 bit that's a major downside on these systems no matter the OS you use.
I mostly use Linux (currently only 32 bit, but will move to 64 soon) but it's pretty good being able to run on different systems.

@scrag_10: As much as I love to promote Linux normally this isn't really helping anybody in this case - this is simply a workaround around a bug.

I guess you are right hoehrer.

In a way, it was a bug in the code, but since there is not even a mention if this will ever be supported (or if its being worked on). I feel like it was simply abandoned.

I have been considering Linux, but without internet the OS is slightly harder to use then Windows.

One way to "work around" the bug is to use a Co-operative Linux Kernel http://www.colinux.org/.

This way I can install the 64bit blender version for linux while maintaining my Windows. I just have to have some time to look into it.

But still, some comment from the developers about the future of windows x64bit support would be welcomed.

There is a SVN 64bit version available on graphicall.org website.

Also, the 2.48x release is 64bit, albeit it still rather experimental. Many of the dependencies have now been built, but there are still lacking ones. Also, this needs to get tested properly still.
