Description
is the cursor really so important and in use so often that it needs its own mouse button? wouldn't some other keyboard short cut be sufficent? (or LMB + some modifier key but i don't know if there still are free ones?)

actually i am quite used to it in the meantime, but when i was new to blender i found the constant accidental cursor placing very irritating.

it still sometimes happens that i accidentally place the cursor. for example when i miss the transform widget.

I think there is a point here. The 3D widget sure is important, but really.. i find it maybe bit odd to have one mousebutton dedicated just for it. Maybe make it a SPACE menu thingy? Or some quickey?

shift+C centers the 3d cursor at its original position.

Yeah. Although I really like the way of blender UI, I can't understand the wasting with left mouse button. Neither 3D cursor, nor mouse gestures are so important they should occupy the best-accesible button that computer has.
I hope it will change with 2.50...

I only recently started using the 3D cursor, after years of Blender use. Now I couldn't live without it. I use it enough that I'm happy with it taking the LMB. However, I think it'd be OK to require a modifier key too, like Shift-LMB. In any case it shouldn't be buried in a menu.
