Description
When i create a detail that has a mirror modifier, then I create a "ALT + D" duplicate.
Each duplicate still maintains the mirror modifier. But when I try to "apply" the modifier on any of the duplicates, it gives me an error.
I use this often, so it becomes quite annoying at times. Basically, i have to delete the mirror modifier on all of the duplicates first. Then I have to go into edit mode and duplicate faces and mirror along the same axis. After which i can finally perform the cleanup action to reduce polys.

This makes no sense. Why are you doing all this extra work? You should simple do one of two things:
1) Use Shift+D to create a non-linked duplicate instead of Alt+D
--OR--
2) In the "Link and Materials" panel, click the little box with the number in it next to the data-block name in order to make it a single user copy
You can then apply the mirror without any problems.

I have a feeling that i have not described it enough, as what you are saying does not going to simplify it. I'll try to explain it in more details using an example.
Lest say I want to create a complex object that is going to be placed in various locations. lets also say that this object is symmetric.
So I start with a new object. add mirror to have it symmetric.
then I want to place it all over the objects but i want to be able to continuously add more details to the object. So Alt-D is one of the only ways. (duplivert has issues that original needs to be at center - so not useful)
when I Alt-D an object, even the mirror is duplicated. So far so good.
later on, i decide that the current mesh is good, now i want to remove the mirror and clean/optimize the mesh.
and here is where the problem starts.
when I try to apply the mirror modifier... it gives me an error saying that its a linked object, so sorry bud, can't do it.
ok, so second option is to delete the mirror, and in edit mode simply duplicate the faces and scale -1 on x axis. but.. when i delete the mirror, it only deletes it on the selected object, not on all instances.
after i delete them, i can then duplicate faces and mirror them along -1 x axis. then optimize the mesh and so forth and so forth.
Hopefully this explains it a tad better.
