Description
Instance object is similar to the "ALT + D" duplicate in a sense that it represents the same geometry using same geometry data. But that is the extent of the similarities.

Instance object would be able to accept a Parent Tree and duplicate it at any location.

This can be an option for an "EMPTY" object. you place it where you want, then enter the name of the designation object. and presto chengo, empty is now an instance. This can be then changed at any time if you feel that the original object (group/parent tree) is not the one you'd like to use. you just simply change the target name.

This could also solve the issue i presented in idea 303
http://www.blenderstorm.org/qapoll/ideas/idea/303, issues with using/applying modifiers on "ALT + D" duplicates.

I'm not sure, but isn't that exactly what the "DupliGroup" button is for?

* Just create an object (or several) and add them to a group
* Now either use Add->group->"groupname" or create an empty and use the DupliGroup in the [F7] buttons.

(I think for this to work the original objects in the group need to be in another layer or even appended from another file)

The problem is that the group object has a messed up origins that can't be currently altered.

If that gets fixed (idea 264), it might be essentially slove this idea.

Another thing, is that this feature is hidden... sort of hidden, at least not intuitively located under "Animation Settings" Maybe it should be placed under the Object and Links. Also it depends what the original idea behind this function is in Blender, will definitely investigate.

Another difference is the need of first defining a group. having the ability to apply this DupliGroup to any object, including Parent tree reduces the complications in usage of DupliGroup.

Messed up origin:
_Of course_ that can be altered, It always uses the absolute center of the scene for its origin - that's why i mentioned the extra layer ;)

Problem is that it means any objects have to be at the origin. And with some of my projects, there is simply not enough layers.

Additionally using the instance object (like DupliGroup) removes a step (creating a group) in the creation process.

I see this more as an layers issue, rather than dupligroups one. I'd sometimes like to blender see more the treestructure of objects, e.g. when importing an object, it could take all it's children too. Managing groups can be sometimes hard, while keeping objects in hierarchy seems more simple to me.
