Description
Did you guys see the layer-manager of the new Cinema 4D R10?
It has by far the best layer-manager out there. I would love to see only the half of the features of their layer-manager implemented in blender.
Take a look a this:

What do you think?

a developer named Digimator is currently working on layer management features. don't know what comparison there is between this and the features in C4D.

the layers in max aren't bad either.. have seen the cinema 4d ones yet. I mean essentially it's like another tree view. Nice to know someone is working on it.

I've made a couple of mockups some time ago, that shows how a layer manger could be integrated within the outliner:

i like your idea, Gustav. it reminds me a little of 3ds max's layers, yet more accessible. i really like the idea of having it integrated or paneled with the outliner... very logical.
good thinkin'!

This layer "issue" is not easy to solve and needs some fundamental "think over"

I'm really not convinced that the concept of "layers" is really the best way to organize things in a 3D application. It seems like Blender's group system would be a better thing to use (and expand) for that purpose.
It would be nice to see a really well-thought-out design for a dedicated group-manager UI.
And groups could very logically be expanded to take on the organizational roles that layers are currently used for, but would be more flexible in many ways. Especially if boolean operations could be used (i.e. you could make lights only affect objects who were both in the "window" and "building 1" groups, to logically specify all windows in building 1).
IMO the only place in Blender were the term "layer" really makes sense is the render layers.

layers are ANOTHER "LAYER" of organization. if you have groups but still need more control over what is visible or accessible, layers can be useful.
but it would be awesome if blender's layers can at least have names. i'm going over the mancandy videos right now and it would be just so much easier if i could see that the second layer was HEAD CTRLS (or whatever) instead of almost having to memorize it.

groups/layers : tomato/tomato
call it whatever you want, blender just needs better object organization.

WHO NEEDS LAYER MANAGEMENT?
I mean, REALLY! How UNORGANIZED a bunch are Blender users?
A REAL Blender user remembers ALL his layers and ALL object layers OFF HAND and this layer manager crap is just USELESS CLUTTER!
People who request a layer manager are just FULL OF SHIT and HOT AIR!
Get ORGANIZED PEOPLE! It can't be that hard to merely remember 20 numbers!
