It would be nice if Blender had some sort of simple ambient light that would show up in the viewport, similar to other 3D modeling packages. The main benefit would be having more efficient control over the ambient settings, without having to re-render for any minor changes or taking time to place fill lights throughout the scene.
Isn't this just a different interface to ambient light then tweaking them in the world setting. I mean ambient doesn't have any direction so what's the point of giving a actual lamp in the viewport?
Do I understand you well that you would move the 'Ambient Light' settings from World Buttons to special lamp objects (correct me if I'm wrong)? I don't think it would be beneficial.
musk: It doesn't necessarily need to be a light that you add to the viewport, just some way to change the ambient light settings so they are visible in the 3d viewport.
emu: Right now, when the ambient light is set in the world buttons, it doesn't show up in the viewport. When the scene is rendered, the ambient settings also only appear to change the material colors instead of the actual lighting. It seems the only way to get decent ambient without fill lights is either through AO or the material emit settings, which seems like a long way around a simple problem.
